A. The TDS Enrichment Program for Gifted Students and Homeschoolers

The TDS Enrichment Program for Gifted Students and Homeschoolers was developed to help us fulfill our mission to provide exceptional opportunities to enhance the development of children’s’ talents.
Summer Session
Summer Session: Grades 2-5
The summer enrichment classes will begin on Monday, June 23rd and end on June 27th. Classes require a minimum of five and allow a maximum of twelve students. Classes will be adapted to fit the needs of each group of students.
Cultural Immersion: Africa – 10 am to noon
Teacher: Kara Hill
Students will study the African continent. A general overview plus detailed examination of selected countries will be included. Students will study Mali, Egypt, South Africa and Morocco. Topics to be covered include each country’s industry, animals, ecosystems, history, and cultures. Students will also study African geography to include Ngorongoro, the world’s largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera.
Adventures in Literature: Shakespeare – 1 pm to 3 pm
Teacher: Kara Hill
Students will study several of Shakespeare’s plays. They will discuss why his plays are still so popular and what relevance they have to our lives. They will identify aspects of the plays that are a part of our culture, including identifying lines from the plays that we use on a regular basis. Students will design costumes and act out parts of the plays.
Chess Camp - 9:00 am to 12:00 pm - August 11-15
Chess Coach: Roy Rhodes
For Kids: What is chess? Chess is a game of strategy! This camp will not only explain the basic rules, but will summarize the principles and strategies of the most famous chess players in history. Kids will have fun playing games and making new friends. Don't be afraid if you are new to chess, for "Every chess master was once a beginner." --Irving Chernev, chess writer (1900-81)
For Parents: Why chess? Would you like your son or daughter to learn to sharpen oberservational skills, analyze complex situations, identify a goal, develop a plan, take action(!) by carrying-out that plan, experience the consequences of action, positive or negative success/failure) while developing sportsmanship and friendships with others while having fun playing a GAME?! Cost per session:
$150 for the first course for one child
$110 for each additional sibling
$110 for each additional course
$260 for the first course for 2 children from one family: $260
$160 for each additional course for the same 2 children from one family

Music Fun for Fantastic Kids - 9:00 am to 9:45 am - August 11-15
4:00 pm to 4:45 pm - August 11-15

For children ages 2-5 and parent/caregiver.
Cost: $50.00 for the first child
$35.00 for each additional sibling

B. Smart Solutions Tutoring at The TDSThe TDS has partnered with Smart Solutions Tutoring, a local tutoring group designed to meet the needs of child and adult learners. The tutors are licensed teachers in the Commonwealth of Virginia and seventy percent hold a Master's Degree.
